Saluting the Pillars of Our Industry

PMs and CMs, You Are Our Quarterbacks

With November 1st heralding International Project Management Day, I’d like to take this opportunity to honor not just Project Managers, but Construction Managers as well.

About 20 years ago I was a Design Engineer not yet in my 30s. I’ve always had a thirst for self-challenge and achievement, and my younger self was hankering for more – more knowledge, responsibility, and experience. Hence, I decided that a transition from Design Engineer to Project Manager was the next logical and desired move for my engineering career. So, I took this enthusiastic ambition, approached my valued mentor and management team, and pitched my request for the opportunity to step up and into a PM role.

Okay, truth: the latter is not 100% accurate. My method was less like pitching and more like imploring.

“Be Careful What You Wish For”

Delivery method notwithstanding, my request was granted. I was fortunate enough to be given the opportunity to move into project management, and I looked forward to this new role with the expectation that it would surely be fun, exciting and sexy.

But as I jumped in with both feet, I quickly came to understand the expression, “Be careful what you wish for.”

I was quickly awakened to the reality of The Life of a Project Manager

Fun and Rewarding – But Not Without Challenge

Coordinating multiple design disciplines (please! no more ‘coordinate in field’ drawing notes), managing Owner expectations (added scope but no added time?), overseeing subcontractors (you want how much for that change order?), traveling North America and beyond (no, I did not get to stop at the beach or visit tourist attractions), and late nights, early mornings, long waits in airport terminals, or canceled flights (always pack an extra day’s clothes) awakened me to the reality of The Life of a Project Manager.

All kidding aside, despite its trials and challenges, project management turns out to be enjoyable and rewarding work.

PMs and CMs are the face of our companies, steadfastly leading the effort to turn our customers’ visions into reality.
The Backbone of Our Business

Which leads me to the key premise: Project Managers and Construction Managers are the quarterbacks of our industry. They are the face of our companies, steadfastly leading the effort to turn our customers’ visions into reality. Make no mistake: PMs and CMs have a talented and dedicated support team behind and alongside them, but they are blessed with skill sets for managing and leading people and projects while addressing the daily challenges of maintaining quality, budget and schedule.

At Food Tech, we have an incredibly talented and committed group of PMs and CMs, and we take immense pride in having these individuals as the faces of our company.

So, to this invaluable group of PMs and CMs: we salute all of the hard work, dedication, and loyalty you show our customers and your teammates. We infinitely value and appreciate you each and every day, but on this day, in particular, we salute you with the extra special attention you deserve. Cheers.
